The Savannah Bananas(8-11) returned home to Grayson Stadium Thursday evening to play the first place team in the West standings, the Florence RedWolves(13-4). The game was sold out with 4,179 fans attending the game- it was the 9th consecutive home game sold out.
It was a thrilling ball game with Savannah making a comeback to win the game in the 9th inning 5-4.
In the 2nd inning the first 4 hitters for Florence recorded hits and they scored 2 runs. Matthew Beaird,c(Coastal Carolina) doubled and went to third on a single by Jim Wagner,rf(Augusta). Both runners scored on a double by Bailey Connell,3b(Lander).
Savannah scored their first run in the 2nd inning. Bryce Fisher,rf(Oklahoma State) singled and scored on a double by Utah Jones,ss(UNC).
In the 3rd inning, Savannah scored 2 runs. Max McDougald,3b(Wofford) singled and advanced to third on a double by Matthew Pita,lf(VMI). Catcher, Brandon Purcell(Georgia College) singled to drive in both runners.
Florence scored a run in the 4th inning when Tanner Mann-Fix doubled, later advanced to third and scored on a fielders choice.
Going into the 9th inning the game was tied at 3-3. The RedWolves took the lead when Zach Jacobs,dh(FMU) hit a home run over the right field fence- it was his 5th home run for the season.
The bases were loaded for Savannah in the bottom of the 9th inning when Garrett Nelson,dh(Long Beach State) singled to drive in 2 runs to win the game. Nelson arrived in Savannah by plane in the morning and helped the team win at night driving in the winning runs.
Starting pitcher for Savannah, Bryan Cruse(Memphis) pitched 6 innings, allowed 3 runs on 10 hits, 6 strike outs and walked one batter. Reliever Hunter Phillips(Georgia Southern University)pitched 2 2/3 shutout innings allowed 1 hit and recorded 3 strike outs. Closer Austin Covers,(Heartland C C), (W,1-0) pitched 1/3 inning, allowed 1 run on 1 hit and struck out 1 batter.
The next home game for Savannah is Saturday, June 24, at Grayson Stadium against the Lexington County Blowfish starting at 7:05 pm.
