The Savannah Bananas(15-15) returned home to play the Martinsville Mustangs, Saturday evening,July 8th at Grayson Stadium in front of 4,169 fans. The 14th concetutive home game sold out.
The game was stoped after Martinsville completed their 7th inning and the game was later called because of heavy rain and lighting. Savannah won the rain shortened game 4-2. It was the 7th straight home win for the Bananas.
Leading off the game for the Mustangs, Josh Smith,dh(Grand Valley) singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by center fielder Zach Weatherford(Wright State).
Savannah took the lead in the 3rd inning when Matthew Pita,2b(VMI) doubled driving in 2 runs.
In the 3rd inning Savannah scored 2 more runs on a single by Jacob Southern,dh(Jacksonville).
Martinsville scored their final run of the evening in the 7th inning when Lee Sponseller,rf(Ohio Dominican) hit a home run over the right field fence- it was his 7th home run of the season. Sponseller is competing in the home run derby contest at the CPL All Star festivities.
It was a solid pitching performance by Savannah pitcher, Bryan Cruse,W,4-0(Memphis) pitching 7 innings, allowed 2 runs on 7hits, 2 BB, and 9 strike outs.
Savannah scored 4 runs on 4 hits. Pita was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI's.
The Coastal Plain League All Star event is July 9th thru July 10th in Holly Springs,N.C.
